[edit] Huge Weekend for Kinsmen

Announcement of Peterborough-bound national convention, awarding of bursary to local student and 50 years for Kin Garden Court -- local service club talkin’ proud!!

(PETERBOROUGH) If Saturday’s impressive presentation of the Portraits of Honour tribute to fallen Canadian soldiers wasn’t enough, the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough kept the ball rolling, announcing the local service club will host the 2012 Kin Canada National Convention.
A first for Peterborough, it will happen in August of next year While details of the convention are in the planning stages, what is known is the event will bring some 500 Kinsmen from across Canada to the city and provide a major economic boon to the region. The hosting of the national convention is a major coup for the local club, coming to Peterborough as the term of national president Dave Ronson, a longtime Peterborough Kinsmen member, winds down.
Also Saturday, the club announced that Kenner grad Dalandrea Adams is one of the recipients of an annual Kinsmen bursary for her post-secondary studies. The Peterborough teen will receive $1,000 to help her with costs at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she will major in English and philosophy.
••• Kinsmen Garden Court, a 66-unit town home complex for senior citizens of modest means, marked its 50th anniversary on July 1 with a grand ceremony.
Located at 831 Dutton Rd., the complex is overseen by Peterborough Kinsmen Club Enterprises Limited. The first phase was officially opened July 8, 1961, with rents set at $44 for a studio suite, and $55 for a one-bedroom suite. The second phase opened Nov. 14, 1964.
Well prior, the City of Peterborough offered 12 acres of land in the north-end of Peterborough at no cost to the Kinsmen Club on the understanding that the land be used for seniors housing within a three-year time frame. The City also agreed to charge an annual grant of only $25 per unit in lieu of taxes.
The Province of Ontario then committed to subsidize the project to the extent of $500 a unit. Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation approved a mortgage of $166,700 at 5.5 per cent over 45 years. The Kinsmen Club was required to put up $30,000 cash. The project would cost a total of $211,000.
Ev Markus has been the superintendent of maintenance since Sept. 1, 1986.
The late Joe Surlovich was administrator for 27 years until his retirement in 2003. Jim Coghlan is the current administrator The current board of directors is comprised of Larry Liss, president; John Holmes, vice-president; Randy Reid, secretary-treasurer; and directors Vince Anglesey, Ray Craig and Ron Kaye.

National Portraits of Honour

Portraits of Honour is national project by Kin Canada honouring those who have fallen in combat during the war in Afghanistan and, by extension, all past, present and future Canadian Armed Forces personnel. From its inception in February 2009 until its planned conclusion in the fall of 2011, the project will touch Canadians coast to coast through to the scheduled withdrawal of Canadian combat forces from Afghanistan, and beyond.

While the project's main focus is on all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country, it also pays homage to those who carry on in the name of freedom everywhere - whether in combat or in fulfilling Canada's internationally respected peacekeeping role.

The project speaks to the very roots of this, the largest all-Canadian association of community service clubs of its kind. Kin Canada's connection to the military dates back to its origins in 1920, reaching a national crescendo during the Second World War. With many among the Kin family having served, and some fallen, in Afghanistan, Portraits of Honour is a logical expression of this continuing affinity for our troops and of the Association's intense national pride.

[edit]  Celebration Of A Wonderful Person

Fellow Kin,
With the passing of Kin Annette O'Connor I would like to reflect on the spirit and inspiration that she exuded as she bravely battled cancer. The last few times that I had the pleasure of speaking with Annette she always carried herself with a beaming smile, her head up high and determination in her heart. She would NOT allow cancer to stop her from living life with family and friends.
Kin Annette has many distinctions as a member; Life Member, Past Deputy Governor, Past Club Treasurer and friend. I can guaranty that there is no-one who can claim 38 years of PERFECT attendance with the exception of Kin Annette. In this she was rightfully proud.
Let us not mourn the passing but celebrate the life of someone who was a leader and served her community with dignity and style. While she may be gone, she will always live in our hearts and memories.

[edit]  Kin Will Creighton Passes Unexpectedly

Obituary as printed, Toronto Star May 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Will 'The Tiller' Creighton, at the age of 55. Beloved son of Evelyn and the late D.J (Jim) Creighton of Mississauga. Brother of Robert ( Leeanne), John ( Angie), Susan ( Byron), Jim ( Anne), Peter ( Linda), and Alexander (Kelly). He will be dearly missed by his loving partner Edwina Livingstone, his beloved sons Michael and Robert Creighton, and stepson Peter McMaster. Will also leaves behind his son's mother Cathy (Giroux) Morton and a very large extended family, including his many nieces and nephews. Will attended the University of Waterloo, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, which he applied to the growth of Creighton Rock Drill Limited. Will was also recognized as the foremost professional in marketing the gas rock drill (Pionjar) across Canada. His many accomplishments include the Chairman of the Dixie Presbyterian Church board and three time Deputy Governor of the Kinsmen Club. Will also attended many social events encompassing prospecting that includes the Bancroft Gemboree, which earned him the honorary title of ' Prospector Will'. Family and friends may visit the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel located at 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, ON L5B 1M8 on Friday, May 13th 2011 between 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. Wills service will be held at Dixie Presbyterian Church at 3065 Cawthra Road, Mississauga, ON L5A 2X4 on Saturday, May 14th 2011 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Kin History

May 8, 2011

It was with great sadness that we learned that Will passed away this past Sunday May 7th 2011 at 55 years of age.

Will joined the Kinsmen Club of Mississauga in January 1995 after having the Mississauga Club sponsor a baseball team that he was coaching. Will was extremely involved in his community before joining Kin.

He was very heavily involved in his church the Dixie Presbyterian, where his funeral will be held on Saturday May 14th 2011.

Will never shied away from volunteering to chair a project or to step forward to serve his club or Zone. He served as Club President 3 times as well as Zone C.F. and Service Director twice and Zone Deputy Governor for Halton Peel twice.

He was the catalyst in bringing forward and making a reality the Mississauga Travelling Skateboard park, to which he worked diligently over a 3 year period to have this approved by the City of Mississauga. Through his efforts Will raised $25,000.00, and the Travelling Skateboard Park evolved and became a permanent structure at the Hershey Center in Mississauga.

He chaired the year Fireworks Projects and was the Club Bingo Chairman for many years.

He worked on the Canada Pavilion planning committee for the Mississauga Carrassuaga event which the Mississauga club was involved for 2 years. Will worked on promoting District and FLC Conventions that were hosted by the Mississauga Kinsmen Club and worked tirelessly in the background, to ensure that every delegate that attended had his/her needs meet.

In his spare time Will’s other passion was drilling and mining and he discovered many wonderful parts of Northern Ontario that he shared with his fellow Kin and friends. He could always be found with a least 1 rock or piece of mineral in his pocket to which he could provide a geological story about. He was always giving away shiny stones to his friends.

Will is survived by his 2 sons and long-time girlfriend Edwina and her son, and his brothers and sisters. He will be sorely missed by the members of his Kinsmen Club and District 8 as well as his family and friends and the members of his community whose hearts he touched.

[edit] A Sad Goodbye in Bowmanville and Whitby

In May 2010 both the Bowmanville Kinettes and Whitby Kinsmen & Kinette Clubs felt that they can no longer "Serve their communities greatest needs". With regret Kin Canada and District 8 was informed that both Clubs have decided to submit their charter and cease to exist.

To the past members of these clubs thank-you for doing your best and remember that you are all welcome to continue service in neighbouring Clubs. Please do not lose that spark that brought you into your Club.

[edit] Uxbridge Kin get special thanks

A big thanks to Uxbridge from Salvation Army Tools

Jan 31, 2011 - 04:30 AM

To the editor:

The Salvation Army committee would like to thank the local businesses, residents and organizations that donated toys and food to their toy/food drive.

This year, we received special attention from the Kinsmen Club of Uxbridge which held a special auction to raise funds. And from the younger residents of Uxbridge, the Sparks who donated gifts and the Uxbridge Youth Theatre group for their assistance in helping those less fortunate, and our local fire department, which is always there when we need it.

Also ReMax for its assistance with our toy drive, Canadian Tire, Jones Pools, Pine Grove Church, Bethesda Reach WI, TCG, Township Staff, the Testa Building, and Sears for their creative idea of decorating a tree with mitts and scarves. Paul and Nellie for the beautiful Christmas Stockings for the children and the Uxbridge Toy Drive for their generous donation of toys.

Special thank you to Zehrs for allowing us to set up our Christmas Kettle and of course the general public that volunteered for our Kettle at Zehrs, and those who made donations while shopping and at the office.

Without the very generous businesses and residents of Uxbridge we would not be able to assist in the many different areas of work the local Salvation Army is involved with at this time.

The Salvation Army committee worked hard to give everyone a special Christmas as well as continuing with their special worthwhile programs throughout the year and with Uxbridge's generosity we will be introducing more programs for the coming year.

Thank you, Uxbridge.

Bev Northeast

Chairwoman, Salvation Army, Uxbridge Unit

[edit] Toy Drive to help about 900 families across Kawartha Lakes

Lindsay Kinsmen

Volunteers and community leaders stand amidst a sea of boxes filled with toys donated by the community through the Kingsmen Toy Drive to be given to children in need leading up to Christmas. Toys for Lindsay will be handed out Dec. 23 whereas toys to the rest of the City of Kawartha Lakes will be delivered the day before. Close to 900 Kawartha Lakes families will be helped by this annual drive. Brad Bird, Special to This Week

(KAWARTHA LAKES) Walking into the Kinsmen Club’s Toy Central on Needham Street in Lindsay is like walking into every kid’s Christmas fantasy. Seemingly endless boxes of every toy imaginable, from plush animals and board games to hockey sticks and dolls, the sheer volume of toys accumulated by the Lindsay Kinsmen Club’s annual toy drive is impressive.

The overwhelming support from the community has been incredible said Lindsay Kinsmen Club president Kelly Parker, who added that he wants the community to know that families from across the City of Kawartha Lakes are served by the toy drive, not just those in Lindsay.

Once collection bins in the community are brought into Toy Central, toys are organized according to the ages of boys and girls. From there, toys are further organized into boxes for each family - these boxes fill two large rooms - with the goal of providing at least three to four toys per child per household, explained the Kinsmen Club’s co-chair Tracy Miceli.

Families that are struggling to provide gifts for their children at Christmas can apply to social services to be included on the toy drive list, Mr. Miceli said, and then social services provides the vital information to the club so they can make sure no child is left out and each will have age-appropriate toys to open on Christmas morning.

The needs for such a service has grown over the last year, given the tough economic climate. The toy drive helped out about 800 families last year, and they are collecting toys for 865 local families so far this year, with add-ons expected in the coming days, Mr. Miceli explained.

“It’s going to be close to 900.”

Once the toy drive starts, members of the community can drop off toys or monetary donations around the city, Mr. Parker said, adding that the monetary donations are important to make sure the selection of gifts can be rounded out.

“That is very important because we’ll spend anything from $5,000-$6,000 after the drive on the older kids and the babies,” he said.

As of Saturday (Dec. 18) the Lindsay Kinsmen Club had about $4,000 in monetary donations, Mr. Parker said, adding that students from Central Senior Public School will also be purchasing a lot of gifts for older children this week with $1,700 they raised.

The toys are set to be delivered to families outside Lindsay on Dec. 22 and inside Lindsay the following day, Mr. Miceli said, and getting to make those deliveries can be a real treat, he added, saying the reaction of the parents, when they see all the presents their kids will now have for Christmas morning is incredible and often involves tears of gratefulness.

“For us it’s great because you know what you are doing for the community,” Mr. Miceli said of how it feels for the many volunteers who take part. Mr. Parker added that it is nice to see many more youth volunteers helping out with the drive than in previous years.

“This is great to see the kids helping their community and getting to know their community.”

On top of the busy volunteers working away to make sure everything is ready for the big delivery days, community leaders like Mayor Ric McGee, who donated the Mayor’s Parking Fund to the cause, MPP Rick Johnson and several city councillors were on hand to celebrate the accomplishment.

Looking forward to next year for the toy drive, which has been in place since 1947, Mr. Parker said he would love to see full co-operation with other groups who are doing toy drives in the area to ensure the process is as effective and inclusive as possible and also that no child is forgotten.

“I’d hate to see anyone get left out and that’s what happens when too many organizations get involved,” he said

[edit] A big thanks to Kinsmen

Nov 18, 2010 - 01:37 PM

To the Editor:

It was a damp, rainy Sunday this past weekend, but that didn't keep the Kinsmen Club from climbing up and down ladders in downtown Port Hope.

Every year the members of the Port Hope Kinsmen Club volunteer to put up and take down the Canadian Flags throughout the downtown core. They use their weekends, don't get any reimbursement, and smile throughout.

On behalf of the Heritage Business District I would like to give a shout out to these residents, and let everyone know how much their volunteerism is appreciated.

Inked-up inspiration

Local News By NICKI CRUICKSHANK, BARRIE EXAMINER,  Mark Wanzel photo

With Gabrielle Dube as his inspiration John Donley, past president of the Barrie Kinsmen Club has a tattoo in her honour placed on his left arm after raising over $2,500 for C.F. during the Golf Fore Gabrielle tournament held last month. Oct/12/10

Little Gabrielle Dube has found her way into John Donley's heart.

And now her name and cause are forever etched onto the Barrie man's arm.

Donley sported a new tattoo on Tuesday, reading 'Golf Fore Gabrielle' after making a friendly fundraising bet with the three-year-old's father, Marc.

"It was initiated out of a bet between Gabrielle's father and I," said Donley, past president of the Barrie Kinsmen. "I told him if he could raise $2,000 for the Golf Fore Gabrielle tournament, I'd get a tattoo of the tournament logo."

Dube started the golf tournament three years ago, after Gabrielle was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at only six weeks old. Dube managed to raise $2,500 for last month's tournament, putting Donley in the tattoo artist's chair at Matrix, a tattoo parlour in the Bayfield Mall.

But Donley was happy to endure the slight pain to have Gabrielle's name with him forever.

"She calls me Papa John all the time, and they're basically a second family to me," he said. "There's definitely some sentimentality for me with this tattoo.

"People have said to me, 'You know that's going to be permanent.' I say to them, 'CF is permanent, too.'"

CF is a disease that affects the entire body, causing progressive disability and often early death.

It often mimics other common diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. Common symptoms include difficulty breathing, constant cough with thick mucus, excessive appetite with weight loss, bowel obstructions, diarrhea, repeated bouts of pneumonia and lack of energy.

Gabrielle's endured many of those symptoms for three years, making daily life a struggle for her.

"She was diagnosed at six weeks at Royal Victoria Hospital when she wasn't gaining any weight," said her mother, Celine Laferriere. "I still have a hard time with this, because from the outside, physically she looks like a normal kid."

"She plays and laughs, but when she eats, she takes enzyme pills to help her retain the nutrients," Marc added. "Every morning she has lung therapy to release the mucus in her lungs. We have no history of CF in our family, so we were shocked that she got it."

Having friends like Donley who understand their pain and wanting to raise awareness of CF made Gabrielle's parents very happy.

"Having my buddy get a tattoo with my daughter's name on him forever is amazing," Marc said.

"Having him go through this, enduring the bit of pain for our cause, means a lot," Laferriere said.

Donley said the minor pinching feeling he felt was bearable, and was nothing like what Gabrielle and other CF patients feel.

"This wasn't about a tattoo. This was about raising awareness," he said. "CF kills and is still killing children, so we need to keep fighting until no child like Gabrielle ever goes through it."

Donley said cystic fibrosis is one cause that is supported both locally and nationally by Kinsmen clubs.

METRO VANCOUVER -- Delta lost a true gentleman with the sudden passing of Edgar Clesson Dunning Saturday.

Born in Elbow, Saskatchewan on Jan. 7, 1910, Dunning had celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year.

Dunning had been a fixture in Delta for decades after his family moved from Alberta in 1922, when he was just 12, to start The Weekly Optimist. He held pretty much every position at the Optimist over the years, including reporter, editor and publisher.

He continued his affiliation with the newspaper throughout his retirement by writing his weekly Rambling column that brought the history of the municipality to life every Saturday. His last column was published on the day he passed away.

Dunning was a vibrant presence in the community even as a centenarian, and could be found at many community events. He was a noted historian who loved to share the history of Delta with others.

He earned great respect from all corners for his thoughtful approach and classy ways. It was often said that Dunning never had a bad word to say about anyone.

His humour, sincerity and charm made him an endearing figure woven into the historical fabric of the community in which he was also its most trusted storyteller.

Dunning was a founding member and first president of the Delta Historical and Museum Society and a former president of the Delta Board of Trade (now the Delta Chamber of Commerce).

He was involved with many groups, including the Kinsmen Club of Ladner, the first service club in Delta, which he helped form in 1935. He became its president four years later and just last year received Kin Canada's highest honour by becoming a Hal Rogers Fellow.

A music lover, Dunning, who played drums in his youth, was one of the founders of the Delta Community Band Society, the sponsoring organization for the Delta Community Band.

He received numerous awards, including the first Freedom of the Municipality in 2004 as part of Delta's 125th anniversary celebration. Other recognition included Citizen of the Year and a lifetime achievement award from the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

The new municipal-community archives will include a reading room that bears his name.

Dunning married Elsie Maria Bowing (1916-1998) in 1942 and they had two children, Susan and Gene. He had three grandkids and one great grandchild.

Edit note:
I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Dunning at National convention in 2007. We was a true gentleman with a sharp wit and a long burning passion for Kin. He has honoured by being named the Honourary Governor of District 5. Edgar was one of the last of a generation that shared the same life experiences as founder Hal. Our condolences to Edgar's family and all the Kin of District 5.

[edit] Ajax Kinsmen Step up and Help

Jan 27, 2010 - 02:55 PM

To the editor: For 30 years I have donated blood at the regular Ajax donor clinics. I have made 130 donations.
I have seen many changes from the clinic locations, from Red Cross to Canadian Blood Services, and improved equipment, policies and procedures.
What has not changed are the amazing volunteer workers and the simple need for blood. Recently, I was diagnosed with cancer. My personal outlook is very good.
After checking with Blood Services I was informed that, no matter what type of cancer, no matter what the results, no matter if I make a complete recovery, I can no longer donate blood.
I obviously accept this fact but it hurts.
Please step up and replace me.

Kin Can Do More Then Raise Money

Clean Up Day at Kinsmen Park

On a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning of April 24, 2010, members of the Pickering Kinsmen and Kinette Club of Pickering volunteered their time to help beautify Kinsmen Park by participating in the 6th Annual 20-Minute Makeover litter clean-up.

We all met at 11:00 a.m. in the Kinsmen Park parking lot and received our gloves and bags, courtesy of the City of Pickering. The park was very busy that morning with soccer and baseball games, so we were limited to where we could pick up litter. We had hoped to partake in a barbeque being put on by the Cubs and Scouts, but unfortunately, they ran out of food. On the up side, we had our group picture taken by SNAP Newspaper. Look for our photo in their June edition.

We finished off the afternoon with a visit to a local Tim Hortons for a quick bite and some great conversation.

Many thanks go out toKin Jim, Kinette Fiona, Kin Andy, Kinette Annette, Kinette Sandi, Kinette Marion and Sarahfor coming out to help.

Yours in Kin,
Kinette Michelle

Please check out more of the Pickering Kinsmen & Kinettes. I think you will agree that these are very stylish Kin.

NEWS UPDATE For Organ Donation in Ontario!!

An open letter from Tanis Hargrave, CF Mother

Dan and I have been helping to spread awareness around signing your organ donor cards. If you have a paper driver's license donor card it is now considered private and unofficial. The new system involves registering your wishes on your health card. This can be done by going to The Trillium Gift of Life Web site and downloading the new Gift Of Life Consent Form. Fill it out and drop it off at your closest Service Ontario location or mail it to the Kingston address supplied. Dan is alive today because he received the most amazing gift ever...The Gift of Life!

A mother’s quest to educate you on organ donation is paying off, especially during national organ donation week, which wraps up today.

In January, York Region Media Group featured the story of Tanis Hargrave and her son, Dan, who lives with cystic fibrosis, a genetic, multi-organ disease affecting the lungs and digestive system. In 2002, his only hope for survival was a double-lung transplant and, at the critical moment, a donor supplied him with the organs he so badly needed. The catch was the lungs were to big for the body of the then-teenaged boy and had to be trimmed to fit. When he turned 24, his body began to reject the transplant and his health took a turn for the worst last November.

Again Mr. Hargrave was placed on the transplant list awaiting a match. He was matched and had his second transplant last month, Ms Hargrave said, adding he is “doing very well”. This time around, the donated lungs fit Mr. Hargrave’s body and the surgery that was expected to take up to 15 hours, because of the difficulties associated with second transplant procedures, only took 7-1/2 to complete. “After the first transplant, he was in the hospital for two months,” Ms Hargrave said. “This time, he was out in 28 days.” He continues to rebuild his muscles and work out his lungs at Toronto General Hospital three times a week, but is feeling great, she added. These kinds of miracles — the gift of life — is what motivates Ms Hargrave to continue stressing the importance of registering as an organ donor. “There is so much need for organ donations, but, the fact is, most aren’t aware of how to become an organ donor,” she said.

She is determined to educate the public about the facts by speaking to municipalities and setting up booths at public events, such as the one displaying information at Aurora Town Hall. Others have joined in to open discussions about organ donations, including Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees, who has put forward a resolution at Queen’s Park calling on the province to create and organ registration link on the Service Ontario website to allow Ontarians to register online using their OHIP numbers. “I have met so many people after your article who pull out their organ donor card to show me,” she said. “But because of the changes that have been made, those are no longer valid.” Many are not aware that organ donor registration is no longer done when a person renews a driver’s licence.

Instead, the province has transferred the registration to the Ontario health card so it can be swiped and medical professionals can see right away if the person is a donor, she explained. “If I can inspire one person, it’s all worth it,” she said. A donor card can be downloaded at giftoflife.on.ca and, when you renew your Ontario health card, you can have your wishes stored in the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care database.

While Kin Canada does remain politalically neutral you can download a Petition to request online registration for Organ donation as well as you may read the Organ Donor Registry Release from MPP Frank Kleese

[edit] Zone Durham Spring Conference "Kin in Style"

This years Spring Conference will be hosted by the Bowmanville Kinsmen Club. The Chair person is Scott Kippen .

[edit] Zone I Durham Spring Conference April 10, 2010

Just look at all these Stylish Kin
After a full Spring Conference I must admit I was mentally wiped when I got home. While I did try to thank everyone I will reiterate once again JUST in case I missed someone:
  • Thanks to all who were able to attend and participate. I do hope that this was fun, informative and inspirational.
  • To the host club, the Bowmanville Kinsmen and chairperson Kin Scott Kippen, GREAT JOB!
  • To my club members especially the members who were able to attend the conference, thanks for the support.
  • To any members who disrupted the conference with foolish antics such as a missing fine pot three times! BIG thanks, this is part of the fun of KIN and you did express it. DO NOT LOOSE THAT SPIRIT! It is this spirit that keeps me motivate and I hope yourselves.
  • To Secretary Kin Debra Foggetti and Rules of Order Chair Kin Charlotte Stephenson, you were responsible for keeping the conference on track even when I deviated from the Agenda.
  • To our District Executive who attended and presented, Membership Director Jeanine Bolger and Vice Governor Len Ptak, this is what makes an informative conference.
  • To especially Governor Ed and Secretary Jean who travelled from the Sault to attend Mid Ontario's and Zone Durham Spring Conference. This is dedication that is HARD TO FIND.

One disappointment I do have is that we did not have any interest in anyone stepping forward to take on the position of Deputy Governor. While I would love to do a second term to better the quality of how I do the job, with my current job assignment where I will be on the road anywhere in Canada for half the month until January. This simply will not be feasible. I will FULLY SUPPORT ANYONE to the best of my ability who takes on the DG position as well as Club Presidents and members especially for using the web site. This offer of support does NOT expire. For those who wish to investigate the role and responsibilities of a Deputy Governor or other District Executive position check out the Kin Education web page.

Finally congratulations to the award winners:

[edit] Vice Governor 2010-2011

LM Kathy Alexander
LM Kathy Alexander

Fellow Kin,
My name is Kathy Alexander and I am a Life Member of the Kinette Club of Keswick. I would like to officially declare my candidacy for the position of Vice Governor for the Kin year 2010-2011.

I believe in the future of the Kin Association, its values, ideals and the service work we do within our communities.

A few years ago, some very strong Kin members in our district had the foresight to develop a Strategic Plan. It was originally a 3 year plan, but the realization that it needs to be a continual strategy map was soon recognized. We have worked to develop many of the initiatives, but we still have a long road ahead of us.

For the first time in a number of years our district witnessed a positive increase in membership – our focus now needs to be on retaining those new members and helping them grow into the leaders of tomorrow within Kin. The accountability component has been developed and initiated; however, more attention needs to be placed on holding our club, zone and district leaders accountable to the general membership.

Traditionally, the Kin Association has been the workers without expecting recognition. I believe that it’s time for us to increase public awareness and start to accept the recognition we so rightly deserve. Kin are proud...and we need to show it!

There are a number of energetic and dynamic clubs in our district but unfortunately the keys to their success seems to be a well guarded secret. I believe that each club has the potential to be effective and vibrant – it’s just a matter of discovering and fostering how that can be done. By keeping the lines of communication open, we would be able to take a huge step forward to succeeding with this initiative.

I look forward to addressing any questions or concerns you may have, please feel free to contact me,

Yours in Kin,

LM Kathy Alexander

Further implementation of the Vision 2020 plan will allow all of Kin Canada to work together to build a brighter and better community for all Canadians. Yours in Kin, Kin Dave Ronson

An open letter regarding the National awards Program

The National Awards Committee would like to take time to provide the members of Kin Canada some background on the recent changes to the Awards Program.
Penny with DG Gary
Penny with DG Gary

The changes that were presented at National Convention were not made at the spur of the moment nor without careful thought and consideration. The National Awards Committee began looking at “overhauling” the entire awards program two and a half years ago. We began our research by gathering information on how many submissions have been made to each award over the years. Unfortunately we found that the number of submissions have declined each year. Next we began looking at the quality of the submission.

A very unfortunate reality is that almost half of all submissions submitted from the Districts were ineligible, as they didn’t make the mandatory requirements.

We also talked to Judges who have been gracious enough to give up time with family to judge the National Awards. They were very dismayed that they were spending countless hours to judge these awards just to find out that they were out of contention due to the mandatory requirements. Specifically the Bulletin award was singled out. The Public Relations award was also very frustrating, as it had just become a Scrapbook rather than being filled with public relations materials as mandated. Two years ago the awards criteria was changed to include the fact that it is not to be a scrapbook, but this fell on deaf ears and did not improve the situation.

A thread was posted on Kin2Kin to get member consultation, unfortunately, this resulted in less than 20 responses. After the presentation at National Convention on the proposed changes, only one letter was received and three people meet with the National Awards Chair even though it was clearly stated that the two Awards Committee members present were there to listen, answer questions and address any concerns. With the lack of response, the Committee took this to mean that the membership just wasn’t that interested/concerned with the changes. All comments/concerns that were received were passed onto the Committee for consideration, as is any feedback or concerns. We felt that making changes to the Awards Program would be crucial for its survival. The Committee is currently working on bringing the program into alignment with the Vision 2020 strategy map. We are working on a Communications Award to encompass all manners of Communications including Bulletin and PR.

As to why these changes were made without a vote by the membership, the reason is very simple. The Awards program is not in our General Operating By-Laws and as such a vote is not needed to make changes. As the program is part of the operational aspect of the Association it doesn’t need to go before the Board of Directors. It is instead placed before the Executive Director or his designate at National Headquarters.

We apologize to those members who feel that they were not advised of the changes before hand and ask that you send you comments, questions and concerns directly to the Committee by emailing to Penny Lees-Smith. If we do not hear from the members directly we cannot address the issues.

Yours In Kin,
Penny Lees-Smith,
National Awards Committee Chair on behalf of the National Awards Committee

AWARDS Update!! Zone and District will now ONLY be sending one winner (Kinsmen, Kinette or KIN) for any awards that previously were Kinmen or Kinette. This complements the changes that National has done to the awards program. See above for the update.

SUDBURY, ONTARIO (Feb. 22, 2010) The board, staff, clients and alumni of Rockhaven would like to thank the Kinsmen of Sudbury for their support and generous monetary donation, resulting from the 2009 Showcase Sweepstakes ticket sales.

Rockhaven received a total donation of $25,000 in support of necessary capital renovations and maintenance of the main building , as well as Beyond the Rock , an after-care program that incorporates transitional housing and facilitates the
reintegration of residents back into the community.

"We really would like to thank everyone who purchased a ticket for last year's Kinsmen home," says Patricia Delyea, executive director of Rockhaven. "This community support, and the new partnership that's been established between the Kin Club of Sudbury and Rockhaven, enable us to continue our work in assisting the men achieve and maintain their recovery. There are also enduring benefits to the children, spouses, loved ones and friends of the men we serve. We're really pleased with the Kinsmen's commitment to our services, and we hope to grow the partnership in the future."

Rockhaven provides services to men in the Sudbury area who are committed to a lifestyle of sobriety. Since its inception, the agency has worked with an excess of 2,000 different men to break the cycle of drug and alcohol dependency. With the continued support of community-minded people, Rockhaven's programs will flourish. This generous donation will benefit the agency's current capital projects of repairs list, which include a new heating and cooling system, an updated phone
system, new windows and fire doors, and a complete kitchen renovation.

[edit] Minden's field of dreams is all ice

IAN LAW FOR THE TORONTO STAR
Cars do their best to stay on track as they circle the course in Minden, where ice races take place each weekend through the end of February.

Jan 30, 2010
Ian Law
Special to the Star

MINDEN – What do race car drivers do in the winter? The real diehards race on ice.

This little town, an hour and a half northeast of Toronto, that's famous for its Rockcliffe Hotel, has been hosting this highly entertaining form of auto racing for more than two decades.

Situated right in town is the Minden Fairgrounds, where the local Kinsmen, led by Tom Prentice, carve out a road course in the snow and then flood it to build up more than 30 cm of ice.

Running each Saturday and Sunday until Feb. 28, racers will vie for the Magnum Ice Racing Series Championship in four "rubber to ice" classes (winter tires, no studs), three "street stud" classes and three "race stud" classes.

The classes are also divided by driveline configuration so that rear-wheel-drive cars run together, front-wheel drive have their classes; all-wheel drive and "specials" run in a separate class to keep the racing as competitive as possible.

Having experienced this type of racing for more than 10 years, I know how challenging it is to be competitive and to maintain control on the glare ice. I ran in the rubber-to-ice or non-stud classes and the amount of car control required to run with the best is phenomenal. The top racers can run bumper to bumper and door handle to handle and not touch each other for the 12 laps of a race. This takes a lot of practice and technique, and for those who appreciate those skills, watching these ice racers is a must.

For those who prefer the carnage of car crashes, ice racing has more than its fair share as the novices and mid-packers try to keep up and end up running into the snow banks or bouncing off each other.

The cars with street studs have more grip and as a result, speeds are greater. These cars will go over 100 km/h on the ice. The winter-tire cars that will get up to 80 km/h on the straights on ice you wouldn't want to walk on. The fastest cars run on the race studs which, because they're longer than street studs, their extra grip allows them to reach speeds of over 120 km/h before sliding in a four-wheel drift through the corners.

This entertaining form of auto racing has everything for those speed enthusiasts suffering from racing withdrawal. Extreme skills can be appreciated for the fine car control of the top-notch drivers, many of whom have racing experience in the Canadian Touring Car Championships or the Ontario GT Sprints racing.

Anyone can participate in ice racing with a few minor requirements. You must have a valid driver's licence, be a member of a club recognized by the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs (CASC), and apply for the Basic Competition Licence. Drivers between 16 and 18 must have written parental consent.

Beyond that, all you need is a car that meets the requirements of the rulebook and a good set of winter tires. Most cars are older, unwanted road cars worth less than a grand.

The most I paid for an ice racer was $200. Many seasons of competing in ice racing develops a lot of driving skills and makes driving in a snowstorm a lot easier.

Minden is a winter playground and the snowmobiling capital of Ontario. It has a number of fine restaurants and accommodations.

For more information and rules on ice racing, contact Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs at www.casc.on.ca or the town of Minden at www.mindenhills.ca.

Stuffed animals go to Grandview, CFB Trenton and Sick Kids hospital Aug 23, 2009 - 04:30 AM

By Melissa Mancini

PICKERING -- Patrick Doyle was inspired by the dedication of local bridge ceremonies when the bodies of soldiers killed in Afghanistan are driven down Hwy. 401, and he decided he wanted to do something to help the troops.

"I would see the people on bridges all the time," he said. "Especially with CFB (Canadian Forces Base) Trenton being so close, I thought: what can I do?"

Mr. Doyle's company, Proforma Synergy, recently partnered with Artistic Toys to bring stuffed animals to children through the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and the Grandview Children's Foundation.

Mr. Doyle's company distributes promotional products for other companies. When he came across Artistic Toys, a company in the U.S., and found out it was willing to give away stuffed animals, he looked to find a way to use the product to help local kids.

Mr. Doyle coordinated with the Ajax Kinsmen Club, which paid the shipping, so Artistic Toys could ship and distribute more than 2,000 toys and stuffed animals.

"They were all put to good use," Mr. Doyle said.

[edit] Thank you Fellow Kin

Fellow Kin

Thank you for allowing me to serve you as your Governor this past year.

We still have some work to do but our District is getting stronger each and every year.

That being said this is the final month to add new Kin onto your roster. As of May we were breakeven.

Good news is that the Kinette Club of Barrie has been approved and if all goes right will add 17 members.

However we still could use another 6 -10 to get to that 600 members for June 30th. A few clubs including my own have added a member - it does not cost anything - no dues extra at this time.

Finally - Ed & Jean Dawson along with Pat Payne need to know the new Presidents information of each club as soon as possible in order to put together next years Travelling Kin.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Again Thanks for the Great Year.

Past Gov.

Steve

Edit note..congrats to Steve on a great year..Steve worked hard on behalf of all of us. District 8 continues to be the premiere district in Kin due to the continued efforts of Kin like Past Gov. Steve..

Merry Christmas from Manon & Randy

December Newsletter

Well we are well on our way this year. Randy and I would like to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Since our term began a lot has happened. Many successful fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis have occurred. Kinsmen Club of Sault Ste Marie held a 8 hour bike relay that brought in $6,500.00 Kinsmen Club of Barrie held their Blues and Brews Concert bringing in $24,205.00. Kinsmen Club of Newmarket celebrated their well-deserved 35th Anniversary and donated $3,500.00. These are just the few. Great job Fellow Kin and Thank you.

Shares are selling well. Currently to date we have 547 shares sold and going strong. Will Creighton and Bob Fadock are our highest shareholders with 75 each. Past National President Leona does not have this information at the moment, she informed Randy and I to let her know so she can purchase more in order to be the share leader.

On one of my visits to a local club in Zone B, this certain club asked if the can purchase shares as a club and challenge the others in the zone. That was definitely a YES…

There are many fundraisers to come. Keep up the amazing work you all do. I will be sending out Share Reports Monthly to the Deputy Governors to pass out to the Club Presidents. We are beginning a new adventure to raise funds. We have are having an auction for a “Maple Leafs Greatest Moments Book” autographed by JOHNNY BOWER. We will send out updates on that as well. Please send Randy and I emails of events and Fundraisers that you will be hosting so we can make the effort to attend. One of us will try our best to attend Please keep up the great work in supporting Cystic Fibrosis.

New approach to treating CF lung infection shows promise Toronto, ON (September 22, 2008) – Researchers at the University of Calgary have found a new method of fighting severe lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). These findings are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, this week. Communities of bacteria grow in the lungs of people with CF. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common bacterium found in these communities and is often associated with severe lung infections. Pseudomonas represents a constant and ever present threat to the health of people with CF.  Dr. Michael Surette, Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and his team, working with Dr. Harvey Rabin and the Calgary Adult CF Clinic have found that a group of previously overlooked and often undetected bacteria in these communities, the Streptococcus milleri group (SMG), compounds the danger of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Currently, doctors have treated Pseudomonas with antibiotics, however, the Pseudomonas family of bacteria is increasingly becoming resistant to treatment. Dr. Surette’s research shows clinical benefit simply by treating SMG, and thereby disrupting the bacterial community.  Doctors at the Calgary Adult CF Clinic (Foothills Hospital) have already tested this new approach successfully, with patients admitted to hospital with severe lung infections. People treated with SMG-targeted therapies quickly returned to a stable state. “This is important new information,” said Dr. Michael Surette. “In our small patient group, the laboratory findings have been used to guide treatment, with positive results.” The research project, funded by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has led to a real alternative to combating severe lung infections in persons with CF. Early study results show that it may also be a treatment option for individuals with chronic lung infections unrelated to CF. “These findings underline the importance of supporting CF research,” said Cathleen Morrison, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “In this case, laboratory research has been translated rapidly into actual treatment, helping people with cystic fibrosis fight back against aggressive infections.”

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.

[edit] Initial Public Offering

It was announced that there would be an initial public offering of shares in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.

How many times have you been in a store and purchased a paper shoe (diabetes), a tent (Tim Horton’s), a daisy (cystic fibrosis), or maybe a hot air balloon for a $ 2.00 donation, which was displayed for a week and then thrown out?

Now for a limited time and in limited quantity you can purchase shares in the fight against cystic fibrosis for only $ 2.00 per share. You will be issued a certificate indicating the number of shares that you have acquired, which can be displayed in a place of honour in your home or business.

Wouldn’t it be great to have proof of your involvement when a cure or control for cystic fibrosis is discovered .Which can be used as an invitation to the wrap party . It also makes a great conversation piece for potential new Kin.

As a special bonus (while supplies last) anyone purchasing multiple shares will be awarded a collectors lapel pin as a show of our appreciation.

The Majority share holder (individual) as of June 1st 2009.Will be awarded a fantastic prize at our annual share holders meeting next June 2009. All share holders will be invited to attend this meeting.

Success New Style

Here's what they did.........

The Kinsmen Club of Bolton (Ontario, District 8) celebrates its 45th anniversary this year as a strong, thriving club. The Club membership was stable with long term members but last year, the club approved a motion to actively recruit women into the club. The vote for the inclusion of women was seen as the way forward into the future if the Club was to stay strong, vibrant and in tune with the times.

In a way, this all started in 1999 when the club voted to start a dragonboat racing team in part as a fund raiser (team members were to raise money with pledges to pay back the $3,000 investment) and in part as a means of meeting possible new members to recruit. The Kindred Spirits Dragonboat Racing Team resulted with the 1st team composed of several Club members and retired Kinettes (the Bolton Kinette club at that point had shut down several years earlier), but mainly outside men and women recruited from the community.

By the end of last year, the club had recruited seven new (male) members from the Kindred Spirits team, almost half the club and all of whom have served on the Club Executive including 3 past presidents. Obviously without these new members, the club would have been in severe difficulties with membership.

Meantime, Kindred Spirits evolved into a social club in its own right with a core of about 20 permanent members, including 4 Kinsmen and 10 women. Most of these dragonboaters began meeting weekly for "practice" sessions at a local pub and partying for events like major birthdays, Halloween, July 1st and other excuses to party. Kindred Spirits (including the women) have been actively involved in all Bolton Kinsmen major projects as volunteers so a strong bond and common identity developed between the two groups.

After 9 years of inviting male Kindred Spirits dragonboaters to join the Bolton Kinsmen Club, one of the women piped up and asked "Why the heck can't we be members?" Hence the initiative for the motion to recruit women into the Club. The motion passed with a large majority on a ballot vote but there were a couple of members very upset with the change.

The club had an open house in the summer and welcomed six women interested in membership for the 1st meeting in September. Further, a male dragonboater who had joined Kinsmen but had dropped out in the same year last year, rejoined as a direct result of this change. Happily, those Club members who were upset with the motion all returned and gave the new club configuration a shot.

At the 1st meeting, the prospective new Kin mixed in with the Kinsmen members. The Kin song was introduced (although some stuck loudly to the Kinsmen song!) and the meeting went on. By the end of the meeting, any tension there may have been had subsided and the world did not end. The 2nd meeting was a 100% night. For the 3rd meeting the women all indicated they did still wanted to join. The 4th meeting was another 100% night and a vote held to accept each prospect as a new member. The result - 100% approval for 100% of the new members on a 100% night! 7th meeting, another 100% night. The club ended last year with 15 members so the addition of the six women and the reinstated member means the club has grown to 22 members, a 47% increase over last year.

Changing the Club to be integrated with women, adding six new members and celebrating its 45th year was something to be celebrated! National President Doug was invited to perform the Initiation ceremony and he was able to accommodate that. Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison was invited to participate and she spoke to congratulate the women and the club. Spouses and friends attended to make it a really special night.

Has the introduction of women changed the club? Club President George denHaan reports indeed it has. "Meetings are harder to conduct with all the laughter and noise going on. I think its great! We lost no members from this change and we have had 100% nights three times since the women joined. The night of the motion had a full turnout so that makes four 100% night nights in 2008 which is as many as the club has had in all the years since I joined in 1992. I think that speaks for the success of this change."

George denHaan
