[edit] Governors Newsletter, Pieces of 8 Issue #3

It’s so amazing how time can slip away. What should have been early good wishes for Happy Holidays, have now turned into belated wishes. I truly hope that you took the opportunity to spend time with your family and friends to help celebrate the season. I can still offer best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

With New Year’s just around the corner, the next thought that comes to mind is that it’s time to make New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are made with the best of intentions but amazingly fizzle out so early in the year. I have personally made a few resolutions – one that I definitely intend to keep is to make the next few months as Governor the most successful they can be. I want to visit more clubs and support the Deputy Governors as they prepare for their spring conferences. We have mid term meetings planned for the first weekend in January in North Bay to fire up some enthusiasm within the district and to help the team prepare for the busy months ahead.

Communication
We have posted the minutes from each of the District Council conference call on the website. Please feel free to read through them and share any comments or concerns you may have.

This year’s version of the Guide for Traveling Kin is complete and will be circulated to club presidents and Deputy Governors to share with their members.

I hope all the clubs are making optimal use of the district website to post upcoming events and projects for maximum exposure. The December issue of Kin Magazine is on line and is outstanding. Please take a moment to read through it by clicking on the link: On LIne Kin Mag

Marketing
Karen Piovaty is the National Communications and Marketing Manager and can be contacted at kpiovaty@kincanada.ca. Karen is anxious to support clubs and members with their marketing strategies. Karen is also – always – looking for submissions for Kin Magazine. The printed version of Kin Magazine is an excellent tool to help promote your club as you can share copies with local doctor’s or dentist’s offices with your contact information on them.

Member Relations Co Ordinator
National Headquarters has just announced a new addition to their team. They have hired Bick Trinh to fill the role of Member Relations Co Ordinator. Bick is very excited to begin her journey in Kin and I am confident she will be an excellent addition to an already excellent staff. We will be calling on Bick for support in the new year; however, if you would like to contact her directly, her email is btrinh@kincanada.ca.

Service Information
The Service Team is planning on meeting with the District Council at Mid term in January. Among other items on their agenda, they will be brainstorming ideas for the 90 for 90 Challenge and other Service projects. To the clubs who have already made your Cystic Fibrosis donations, we thank you. If your club has not already contributed but have the funds, please send your cheques into Gary Gornik, the District Treasurer or your Zone Service Rep, so that they can be accounted for and hopefully a bit of interest made on them.

More information will be forthcoming from either your Zone Rep or the District Service Directors; however, in the meantime, you may contact Erin at chirokid@ntl.sympatico.ca and Andy at andhughes@sympatico.ca.

Vice Governor’s Remarks
The Vice team had the opportunity to meet during the Fall Leadership Conference to begin their preparations for their year. The team will also have the opportunity to meet during the mid term meetings to help finalize their plans and begin the process of putting together their presentations for spring conferences.
If you have and questions or comments for VG Ron, he can be reached at ronandsuelaf@eastlink.ca.

Zone Spring Conferences
Although they are still months away, some zone spring conference dates have already been set.
Zone Halton Peel – March 3rd in Streetsville (tentative).
Zone Durham will be April 14th in Ajax
Zone Mid Ontario will be April 21st in Orangeville
Zone C will be April 28th in Minden
If other zones know of any dates, please let me know so that they can be posted and hopefully help to boost attendance.

Membership Information
According to the November membership stats, our district is down 57 members. The positive to this is that we are only down 2 members since the end of September. I believe that even though we are down in numbers, the members that remain in District 8 are committed to making a difference in their community, which could only mean that there will be an increase at some point. As the holidays approached, we might have not been as involved, but as the New Year approaches, the opportunity to share the gift of Kin will present itself again. Please remember to let the rest of your zone and the district know of upcoming events to garner some support and advertisement.
DMD Tony can be reached at kintony@hotmail.com if you have any questions or comments.

Awards
National Awards committee is beginning to prepare for the 2012 Diane Rogers Kin Pride award. If you have a trivia-type question but not too club-specific, please send your questions to Bick – National Members Co Ordinator at btrinh@kincanada.ca.

Portraits of Honour tour
LM Dave Sopha, HRF has finally arrived home. The tour, lasting over 8 months, has finally returned to District 1 and the Preston Kin family in grand style. A gala evening was held on December 10th in Preston to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Kin Dave and his team. It was welcome home fit for a hero and certainly well deserved. Congratulations to all who helped organize a wonderful evening of celebration.

Upcoming Events
Hockey Night in Brampton/Bramalea – Wednesday January 18th – Osler Employees verses Montreal Canadiens Alumni. Contact Pres Vis Gidvani at vgidvani3994@rogers.com, for more information.
District Curling Bonspiel – co hosted by the Kinsmen Clubs of Stouffville and Bolton. It will be held on Saturday February 25th in Orillia. More information will be on the district website.
Kin Day at the Toronto Marlies – Sunday February 26th at the Ricoh Colliseum vs the Hamilton Bulldogs. $5 from each ticket sold will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis and there is a friendly competition verses District 1. Please watch the District Website for more info.
